My Family's Favorite Summer Fun in Maine's Lakes Region

This is Where My Kids Like to Go!

By Jess Gilman, Macaroni KID May 17, 2022

My kids range in age from 7 to 17 and it's not always easy finding attractions to suit them all. Over the years we've found a few local outings they always agree on - no matter what age they are. We wanted to share them with you and inspire your family to get out and explore the Lakes Region and Outer Portland.

Sebago to the Sea Trail Standish, Gorham, Windham, Westbrook, Falmouth and Portland, Maine

This amazing 28-mile trail starts at Sebago Lake in Standish and ends at Casco Bay. A large part of the trail is paved and suitable for strollers, bikes or wheelchairs. The part we hike most often follows the beautiful Presumpscot River where the kids and dog have been known to stop for a cooling swim! Port-a-potties and parking are available at spots such as the Trail Head in Standish, Shaw Park in Gorham and the Mountain Division Lot in Windham.

Maine Wildlife Park Gray, Maine

I visited the Maine Wildlife Park with my grandparents more than 40 years ago and it was one of the first places I took my daughter when she was born! The park is home to native animals that can't survive in the wild. Visitors walk a paved loop under shady pine trees and view wildlife up close and safely! Our favorites are the moose - what is yours?

Pineland Farms New Gloucester, Maine

Our family is all about life on the farm! We love visiting Pineland Farms for so many different reasons. In the summer we walk along hiking trails, explore the pond, enjoy seasonal classes like strawberry salsa making and enjoy visiting the animals in the barnyard! When the kids were younger we attended many of their farm-themed story times and ate at the market.

Sebago Lake State Park Casco, Maine

Wooded trails and campsites, outdoor picnic areas, a sandy beach, crystal clear FRESH water and views of the White Mountains - Sebago Lake State Park offers everything Maine Lakes are known for. Even if you don't plan to stay and camp, visit for a day of swimming, boating and fishing on Sebago Lake.

Naples Causeway Naples, Maine
We love visiting this bustling strip on summer evenings because there is so much to do, beautiful lake views and not a lot of walking! The kids get to play mini golf and eat ice cream. My husband and I get to have a great dinner and watch the sun set over Long Lake. Seriously, everybody wins!

Bridgton Drive-In Bridgton, Maine

Another CLASSIC Lakes Region activity is packing everybody in the car with pjs, pillows, blankets and heading to the Bridgton Twin Drive-In. Our family of six can enjoy two movies and snacks for less than it costs to go through McDonald's Drive Thru! The best part, snuggling up under the starts and enjoying some good old fashioned entertainment.

River Run Canoe & Camping Brownfield, Maine

When the kids were younger it was often difficult to get out and enjoy some of the activities we were used to. Luckily, River Run Canoe & Camping offers a short, easy canoe trip along the Saco River. We rent everything we need and then get a shuttle ride to Lovewell Pond. From there it takes about two hours to paddle back to River Run - stopping to swim and fish along the way!
